ABOUT BWTS

What is BWTS?

According to IMO estimates, ships carry 3 billion to 5 billion tons of ballast water in the world every year.
The IMO developed and adopted the International Convention for The Control and Management of
Ships Ballast Water and Sediment,2004 (BWM Convention 2004) with the aim to protect the marine environment from the transfer of harmful and invasive aquatic organisms in ballast water carried by ship.

The BWM Convention entered into force on 8 September 2017.

Furthermore, for the ships engaged in U.S. waters, the installation of the ballast water management system
is to be approved by United States Coast Guard (USCG).

The latest information of the approval of BWMS by USCG can be found in USCG Homepage : https://www.dco.uscg.mil/Our-Organization/Assistant-Commandant-for-Prevention-Policy-CG-5P/Commercial-Regulations-standards-CG-5PS/Marine-Safety-Center-MSC/Ballast-Water/
